Dreaming in Color

A mix of calibrachoa creates a heat-tolerant, overflowing mix without the need to deadhead.

Winter has hit hard these last two weeks.  After Easton and I had two weeks off for our school Christmas vacation we were hit with snowy conditions that canceled another week of school.  We returned for one full week only to be stuck home again tomorrow due to extremely low temps.  While the extra breaks are welcomed in many ways, cabin fever has started to settle in.

My favorite way to overcome the cold and dismal days…. dream, plan, and research for the future!  Here are some of the most inspiring vlogs and articles I keep going back to and I think you will enjoy as well.

  1. Inspiring Varieties and Displays
Credit should really be given to my mom for this one as she introduced it to me over break.  We listened while making a grocery shopping run and then I have since found myself going back to it again for more ideas.  In this episode the host, Laura, showcases her favorite varieties from 2024.  I am excited to say we should be getting a few of these herself but more than just the varieties that she showcases, I love to see how she mixes plants.  If you struggle with garden design, her videos can provide such great inspiration. The geranium, supertunia, boxwood combo… perfection!

  2. Full Color Containers
Have you grown scaevola before?  No?  Well I haven’t either but once you see it in this next video, you will be wanting to!
I saw this unique, fan-shaped bloom at a growers variety day last year and I marked it as a MUST try, its foliage is beautiful and its blooms are so very unique.  We placed two varieties of scaevola on our list for this spring and I almost forgot about it until I came across it in the beautiful planter in the following video.  Take not at about 10:30- that blue fan flower is so unique and we will have it in blue and pink!

  3. Uniquely Repurposed
Last year we had quite a few people looking for containers and pots, we sold a lot.  We purchased even more this year but to be honest… What I really kind of love is a uniquely repurposed pot.  Not only is repurposing a vessel a great way to save money, when overflowing with beautiful flowers, they add a unique bit of whimsical fun and great conversational pieces with guests!

Now, get a nice cup of coffee, cuddle up, and enjoy! Oh, and grab a piece of paper- you will want to take notes and start planning for sunnier days!
